I got into computers in 1980 and In 1994 I decided to go back to school. The plan was to get as many technical certifications as possible. However, after receiveing the A+ cert, a friend got me a job working with a Network Engineer in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This would turn out to be the golden opportunity I was looking for. Over the the next few years he took me under his wing and taught me the tricks of the trade, things you just can't learn in a classroom. So here's a guy who had no certifications and was making $180k a year plus full benefits, go figure.

An MCSE certification or any other will enhance your resume, but without "hands on experience", they don't mean you can do the job, they mean you completed a course and have theoretical understanding. Today most IT employers are aware of this. So get plenty of hands on experience, it's worth it's weight in gold.
